## Guide

### 1. Why It Grinds

A sliding patio door rides on two small wheel sets, called tandem rollers, hidden in its bottom rail\. They roll along a raised metal rail on the sill\. Grinding means something is rubbing: grit, a panel sitting too low, or a worn wheel\.

Fix it soon: a grinding door wears a groove into the track, which costs far more to repair\.

### 2. 1 · Look and Listen

Slide the door slowly and watch the track\. A gritty scrape usually means dirt on the rail\. If the bottom of the frame touches the sill, the rollers have sunk too low\.

A rhythmic thump or click points to a damaged wheel instead\.

### 3. 2 · Clean the Track

Brush the grit loose with a stiff brush and vacuum it up, including the fuzzy pile weatherstrip that seals the gap\. Wipe the rail with a damp cloth and mild soap, then slide the door across and clean the rest\. Often this alone stops the noise\.

### 4. 3 · Inside the Corner

Here the bottom rail is shown cut away\. Each end hides a roller housing, a small steel bracket holding two 32 mm nylon wheels\. The adjuster screw behind the lower hole in the frame edge raises or lowers those wheels\.

Some doors hide the holes under small plastic plugs\. Prise them out with a flat screwdriver\.

### 5. 4 · Raise It a Quarter Turn at a Time

Turn the adjuster clockwise with a cross\-head \(Phillips\) screwdriver\. This pushes the wheels down and lifts that end\. Go a quarter turn, slide the door, and repeat until it stops rubbing\. Then set the other end so the gap to the frame is even, about 6 mm\.

Too high is also bad: the door rattles and can jump the track\. Some brands reverse the direction\.

### 6. 5 · Silicone, Not Oil

Spray a thin line of dry silicone lubricant along the rail, then slide the door back and forth a few times to spread it\. Oily sprays stay sticky and collect new grit\.

### 7. 6 · Still Grinding? Swap the Rollers

Wind both adjusters down\. Lift the door up into the deep top track, swing the bottom out and lay it on padded blocks\. Pull out each roller: a wheel with a flat spot, a wobble or a stuck bearing needs replacing, ideally as a pair\.

Glass doors are heavy\. Always lift with two people\.

### 8. Back on Track

Set the new rollers at their lowest, tip the top of the door into the top track and lower the bottom onto the rail\. Raise both ends a quarter turn at a time until the door glides quietly\.

Call a professional if you see metal shavings or the rail itself is bent\.
