## Guide

### 1. A whole DJ booth in one box

This is the Pioneer DJ XDJ\-XZ\. It packs two music players, called decks, and a mixer, the part that blends their sound, into one unit about 88 centimetres wide\. A DJ uses it to play one song after another without a gap\. Drag the scene to look around\.

It weighs about 13 kilograms and has no speakers of its own: the sound goes out to speakers like the two beside it\.

### 2. Music from a USB stick

Songs arrive on a USB stick in the slots at the top right, so no laptop is needed\. The 7\-inch touch screen lists the songs and shows each one's waveform, a picture of its loud and quiet moments\. Turn the big knob to pick a song, then press LOAD 1 or LOAD 2\.

Blue is deck 1 and orange is deck 2 on the waveforms\.

### 3. The jog wheel: a hand on the record

Each deck has a big jog wheel, about 20 centimetres across\. Touch the top and turn it to scratch, rubbing the sound back and forth, or turn the outer edge to nudge it slightly faster or slower\. Try it: drag around either jog wheel and watch the waveform follow\.

The little round screen in the middle is the on\-jog display\. Its white needle turns as the song plays\.

### 4. Play, cue and tempo

PLAY/PAUSE starts the song and CUE jumps back to a chosen starting point\. The long TEMPO slider at the right of each deck makes the song faster or slower, so its beats can line up with the other deck\. Move the slider and watch the jog, the needle and the waveform speed up or slow down\.

Matching the speed of two songs is called beatmatching\. The SYNC button can do it automatically\.

### 5. Eight pads for every deck

Below each jog wheel sit eight rubber pads that light up in colour\. The four mode buttons above them change what the pads do\. HOT CUE jumps to saved moments, BEAT LOOP repeats a few beats, SLIP LOOP loops while the song quietly keeps its place, and BEAT JUMP skips ahead by beats\.

### 6. The mixer blends the songs

In the middle, four channel strips each control one sound source\. The three EQ \(equaliser\) knobs turn the bass, middle and treble up or down, and each channel fader sets the volume\. The crossfader at the bottom slides the music from one side to the other\. Slide it and watch the level lights follow\.

The channels are arranged 3, 1, 2, 4 from left to right\. Deck 1 and deck 2 sit in the middle, and channels 3 and 4 take extra players or a turntable\.

### 7. Effects add colour

BEAT FX on the right of the mixer adds effects such as echo, reverb \(a big\-room sound\) and filter \(which trims the low or high notes\), timed to the beat\. The small touch strip called the X\-PAD chooses how many beats each effect lasts\. On the left, six SOUND COLOR FX buttons change the sound of a channel with one knob\.

There are 14 BEAT FX to choose from\.

### 8. Plugging it in

The back panel connects the XDJ\-XZ to the world\. Big XLR sockets send the mix to the main speakers, BOOTH feeds the DJ's own monitors, and microphones plug in too\. LINK sockets join extra Pioneer DJ players, and headphones plug into the front so the DJ can listen to the next song before anyone else hears it\.

Two microphones and two extra players can join the mix\.
