## Guide

### 1. After 120 years I shall open

In 1604, so the Fama Fraternitatis tells, the brothers of the Rosy Cross moved a memorial tablet and found a great nail in the wall\. Behind the fallen plaster stood a hidden door, lettered POST CXX ANNOS PATEBO\. Press the door to open it\.

The Fama was printed at Kassel in 1614\. Its brothers swore their founder's tomb would stay secret for a hundred and twenty years\.

### 2. A second sun

Beyond the door lies a vault of seven sides and seven corners, each wall five feet wide and eight feet high\. No daylight ever reached it, yet it was lit by a sun of its own, burning at the centre of the ceiling\.

### 3. A compendium of the universe

At the centre stands a round altar under a plate of brass\. Its words read: A\.C\.R\.C\., I made this tomb a compendium of the universe\. Every wall is divided into ten squares, each holding a figure and a sentence of hidden learning\.

The Fama never describes the figures\. Those on these walls are imagined emblems\.

### 4. The Book T

Beneath the altar lay Father C\.R\.C\., born in 1378, who lived one hundred and six years\. His body was found whole and uncorrupted, holding a parchment book called T, the brothers' greatest treasure after the Bible\. Open the book\.

### 5. The rose upon the cross

Their sign is a rose blooming at the heart of a cross\. The cross stands for the trials of the body; the rose for the soul that unfolds through them, its reward\. Touch the rose to let it bloom\.

Michael Maier, who defended the brotherhood in print, read the cross as trial and the rose as reward\.

### 6. Six vows of the brotherhood

Heal the sick, and take no payment\. Wear the dress of whatever land you are in\. Meet once a year at the House of the Holy Spirit\. Choose a worthy successor\. Let C\.R\. be your seal and mark\. Keep the brotherhood secret for one hundred years\.

### 7. The invisible college

The brothers promised a universal reformation of the arts and sciences, the healing of all sickness, and the reading of nature as one great book\. They invited the worthy to seek them, yet no one has ever proved the order or its vault existed\.

Scholars credit the manifestos to Johann Valentin Andreae and his Tübingen circle\. Their legend lives on in later orders that still bear the rose and the cross\.
