## Guide

### 1. Bosch Serie 4 washing machine

Run a wash on a Bosch Serie 4 WAN24109GB, an 8 kg, 1200 rpm front loader, and see inside it\. Use it like the real thing: tap the door, the detergent drawer, the dial or the laundry basket\. Drag empty space to turn the machine\.

59\.8 cm wide, 84\.8 cm tall, with an EcoSilence Drive brushless motor\.

### 2. Load the laundry

Open the porthole door and put the clothes in loosely\. Leave about a hand's width at the top of the drum so the laundry has room to tumble\.

You can also tap the basket or the door\.

### 3. Add detergent

Pull out the drawer and pour liquid detergent into the middle compartment, the one for the main wash\. When the machine fills, the water runs through this drawer and carries the detergent into the drum\.

Tap the bottle or the drawer to do it yourself\.

### 4. Choose a programme

Turn the dial to pick a programme: Cottons, Super Quick 15'/30' or Easy\-care\. The display shows the washing temperature, the top spin speed and how long the whole cycle will take\.

Tap the dial to step round, or drag it\.

### 5. Press Start

The machine beeps and an electric lock clicks the door shut\. It stays locked until the drum has stopped and the water is gone\. Then the drum turns gently while the machine senses how heavy the load is\.

Tap the Start/Pause button on the panel\.

### 6. Water fills the tub

The inlet valve opens\. Mains water runs through the detergent drawer and down into the tub, washing the detergent in with it\. A pressure sensor stops the valve at about 13 litres, enough to cover the bottom of the drum\. Bosch calls this load\-dependent filling ActiveWater Plus\.

The cabinet, tub and drum are cut away so you can see inside\. The whole cycle is sped up\.

### 7. Heating and washing

The heating element under the drum warms the water to the programme temperature\. The drum turns one way at about 50 rpm, pauses, then turns back\. Its paddles lift the clothes and drop them into the water, and that tumbling does the cleaning\.

A real wash takes over an hour; here it takes 16 seconds\.

### 8. Drain and rinse

The drain pump pulls the dirty water out through its filter and up the outlet hose\. Fresh water flows in to rinse the detergent out of the clothes, and is pumped away again\.

Real machines rinse two or three times\.

### 9. Spin

The EcoSilence Drive, a brushless motor, speeds the drum up in stages to its top spin speed of 1200 rpm, and the water is flung out through the drum's holes\. Around 300 rpm the tub shakes hardest; the springs, the dampers and the concrete counterweights keep the cabinet almost still\.

Seen from the back: through the belt, the motor turns about ten times faster than the drum \(an estimated ratio\)\.

### 10. Finished

The drum slows to a stop and the machine beeps\. The door lock waits a moment before it clicks open\. Take the laundry out soon so it does not crease or start to smell\.
