## Guide

### 1. Welcome to the garden course

Four holes wait on this sunny lawn: a straight one, a bank shot, a hill and a windmill\. On each hole, roll the ball into the cup in as few putts as you can\. Drag the scene to look around, then press the arrow to tee off\.

Mini golf began in 1867 in St Andrews, Scotland, where a bumpy putting course for women was nicknamed the Himalayas\.

### 2. Hole 1: Your first putt

Press on the green and pull back, away from the cup, like stretching a slingshot\. The dots show where the ball will go, and a longer pull hits harder\. Let go to putt\!

Par 2\. Par is the number of putts a good player needs\. The cup is 108 mm wide, about two and a half balls across\.

### 3. Hole 2: Bank it off the wall

A wall blocks the straight path, so use the border instead\. The ball bounces away at about the same angle it hits, like light from a mirror\. Aim at the right\-hand wall, just past the blocker\.

Par 2\. Golfers call a putt that bounces off a wall a bank shot\.

### 4. Hole 3: Over the hill

Going uphill, gravity slows the ball; on the way down, it speeds up again\. Too soft and the ball rolls back to you\. Too hard and it races past the cup\.

Par 2\. The hill is only 7 cm high, yet a slow ball cannot climb it\.

### 5. Hole 4: Time the windmill

The turning sails can block the tunnel under the windmill\. Watch their rhythm, then putt so the ball arrives just after a sail swings past\. Patience is part of the game\!

Par 3\. In the late 1920s Garnet Carter built Tom Thumb Golf on Lookout Mountain, Georgia, and patented his mini golf idea\.

### 6. Your scorecard

Each peg beside a tee is one putt\. Orange pegs are putts over par, and a hole's pegs turn gold once the ball drops\. Go back to any hole and try to beat your score\!

Around 1930 the United States had thousands of mini golf courses\.
