## Guide

### 1. Remington Power Dry 2000: a fan over a hot wire

The Remington Power Dry 2000 \(D3010\) is a 2000 W hair dryer: a fan blowing air over coils of hot wire\. Air enters through the removable rear grille\. Slide the two switches on the handle to try it\.

The hair stand meter reads the air at the hair; the plug\-in meter shows watts from the wall\. Readings other than the rated 2000 W are estimates\.

### 2. The motor and the fan

With half the case lifted away, you can see the motor spinning a fan\. It pulls air in through the rear grille and pushes it down the barrel\. Slide the speed switch to 0, 1 or 2\.

The real fan turns about 20,000 times a minute; it is slowed down here\. The motor and fan are typical of dryers like this, not from a D3010 teardown\.

### 3. The heating coil

Nichrome wire wound on a cross of mica, a mineral that does not burn, glows and heats the air rushing past\. Choose low, the mid\-heat Eco setting or high, which powers both pairs of coils\.

On high heat and high speed the dryer draws about 2,000 W, nearly all of it in the coil\. Remington says Eco saves energy compared with high heat\.

### 4. The Cool shot button

Press and hold the Cool shot button on the front of the handle\. The coil switches off while the fan keeps blowing, so the air cools within seconds\. Let go and the heat comes back\.

### 5. The concentrator

Click the concentrator to clip it on or take it off\. Its narrow slot squeezes the same air through a smaller opening, so it leaves about twice as fast, in a flat jet\.

### 6. Blocked grille and the safety cut\-out

Press and hold the rear grille to cover it\. With less air, the inside heats up fast\. At about 115 °C a bimetal switch snaps open and the dryer stops, as Remington's manual warns, until it cools\.

Shown faster than in real life; the switch temperatures are estimates\. Fluff on the grille does the same, so pull it off and brush it clean now and then\.

### 7. Your turn

The case is closed again\. Try every control together and watch the hair, the air and the meters respond\.
