# Smeg TSF01 Toaster: Make Toast and See Inside

The TSF01 is Smeg's two\-slice retro toaster, here in pastel green\. Push the lever down, turn the browning knob and try the Defrost and Bagel buttons\. A gauge beside it shows how hot the elements get and how long is left, and you can look inside at the elements, the timer and the crumb tray\.

## Guide

### 1. Smeg TSF01 two\-slice toaster

Smeg's 50's\-style TSF01 has two extra\-wide slots, a spring\-loaded breadlift, heating elements on mica cards and an electronic timer, here in pastel green\. Everything works: load it, set it and run it\. Drag empty space to turn the view\.

Toasting time runs 10 times faster than real life\. The parts inside follow a typical modern toaster, not a Smeg teardown\.

### 2. Drop in the bread

Click a slice on the board to drop it into a free slot, or click it in the slot to take it out again\. The breadlift has to be up\.

### 3. Choose how brown

The browning knob on the right\-hand end has 6 levels, from light to dark\. A higher level gives the timer a longer run: here about 1 minute at 1 and 4\.5 minutes at 6\. Drag the knob round, or click it to move up one level\.

The real knob also has a Reheat position for cold toast, which is not shown here\.

### 4. Push the lever down

Drag the chrome ball lever down until it clicks\. The breadlift stretches its spring, a pusher closes the power switch and an electromagnet grips the armature plate, holding everything down\.

Smeg's manual: if the toaster is not plugged in, the breadlift does not lock\. Let go before the bottom and the spring pulls it back up\.

### 5. Inside the slots

With the front cut away you can see ribbon wire wound on mica cards on both sides of each slice\. The TSF01 is rated 950 W, which heats the wire to a bright orange, and self\-centring racks keep the bread in the middle of each slot\.

Toaster elements are usually nichrome, an alloy that stands the heat without rusting\.

### 6. The timer lets go

A timing circuit counts down the time set by the knob\. When it ends, it cuts the current to the electromagnet, the armature lets go and the spring throws the breadlift up\. The power switch opens as it rises\.

Older toasters use a bimetal strip that bends with heat to trip a mechanical catch instead\.

### 7. STOP, Defrost and Bagel

With the lever down, STOP ends the cycle and pops the toast now\. Defrost lights up and adds time for frozen bread\. Bagel lights up and turns off the middle element, so each slice toasts on one side only\. Leave it on 6 and the bread chars and smokes before the timer ends\.

The TSF01 pops up with a clunk; it has no bell\.

### 8. Empty the crumb tray

Crumbs fall through the breadlift onto a removable steel tray in the base\. Drag the tray handle out, or click it, to slide the tray out for emptying\.
