## Guide

### 1. Welcome to the gallery

This is a Tesla Model Y, the electric family SUV built from 2020 to 2024\. It has no petrol engine at all: a battery and two electric motors move it\. Drag anywhere to walk around it\.

Scroll or pinch to step closer or further away\.

### 2. Pick a paint

The car in our photo wears Midnight Silver, a dark metallic grey\. Metallic paint hides tiny flakes of metal that catch the light, so the colour shifts as you move\. Try the other colours\.

Five seats come as standard\. A third row for seven was an option\.

### 3. Lights that say hello

Each headlamp is lit by LEDs, light\-emitting diodes that use little power and last a long time\. A thin strip glows along the bottom of each lamp so other people can spot the car\. Then the low beams light the floor ahead\.

In Auto mode the lights switch on by themselves when it gets dark\.

### 4. A battery under the floor

Lift the body away and the floor turns out to be one big battery\. It holds 4,416 small round cells, each about the size of a thick marker pen\. Sitting low and in the middle, its weight keeps the car steady in corners\.

Together they store about 75 to 82 kilowatt\-hours\. One kilowatt\-hour runs a 1,000\-watt heater for an hour, so that is about three days of heating\.

### 5. Two motors, four driven wheels

Electricity flows from the battery to two motors, one for each axle\. All four wheels can push, which is called all\-wheel drive\. The rear motor does most of the work and the front one joins in for grip\. Each turns its wheels through one fixed gear, so there are no gear changes\.

Slowing down, the motors work backwards as generators and put energy back into the battery\.

### 6. The Performance pack

The Performance version uses the same battery and motors, tuned for more power: about 340 kilowatts, or 455 horsepower\. It adds 21\-inch turbine wheels, red brake calipers, a carbon\-fibre spoiler and suspension about 13 mm lower\. Switch it on and off to compare\.

It reaches 60 mph \(97 km/h\) in about 3\.5 seconds and tops out at 155 mph \(250 km/h\)\.

### 7. Step inside

Look down through the glass roof into a calm, simple cabin\. Instead of a row of dials there is one 15\-inch touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard\. Choose the seats: All Black, or Black and White\.

The seats are covered in synthetic leather, made without animal hide\.

### 8. Make it yours

Mix any paint with the interior you chose and walk around your finished car\. Its smooth shape slips through the air with very little drag, which helps the battery go further\.

A full charge takes the Performance version about 300 miles \(480 km\) on the official US test\.
