## Guide

### 1. Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100

The Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 stands on its charger beside a model of the teeth\. Its magnetic motor rocks the brush head 31,000 times a minute\. Press the round power button to start it\.

Shown in Navy Blue\. The timer display belongs to this Jig, not the Sonicare box\.

### 2. Clean, White and Gum Care

Press the small button below the power button to change mode\. Clean runs 2 minutes\. White adds 30 seconds of polishing\. Gum Care adds a minute at lower power for the gums\.

The 6100 also has three intensity levels, not shown\. The Gum Care speed is an estimate\.

### 3. Brush the teeth

Drag the brush head across the teeth: it follows your pointer and clears the yellow plaque\. QuadPacer pauses every 30 seconds to move you on, and SmarTimer stops at 2 minutes\. Click the handle to put it back\.

The timer runs four times faster than real time\.

### 4. Not too hard

Pressing too hard wears enamel and gums\. A spring lets the drive tip back, and the pressure sensor measures how far\. Push past 2\.5 newtons: the neck light turns red and the motor slows\.

The real 6100 pulses the handle and flashes an amber light\. The 2\.5 N limit is an estimate\.

### 5. Inside the handle

With the case front lifted away you can see the yellow lithium\-ion battery, the green circuit board with the timer, and the copper coils that push on magnets to rock the drive shaft\. The red sensor measures pressure\.

The shaft really rocks about 258 times a second; it is shown 200 times slower\.

### 6. BrushSync brush heads

Replace the head every three months; BrushSync lights up when it is time\. Click the fitted C2 Optimal Plaque Control head to twist it off, then click the W DiamondClean head\. The handle switches to White by itself\.

Sonicare heads push straight on\. The twist makes the move easy to follow\.

### 7. Charging through plastic

No metal contacts: a coil in the stand makes a magnetic field that changes direction about 80,000 times a second\. A coil in the handle picks it up to charge the battery\. Lift the brush off to see the field stop\.

Philips quotes up to 14 days of brushing per charge\. Charging is sped up here\.

### 8. Your turn

Pick up the brush by clicking its handle, choose a mode, clear all the plaque, then put it back on the charger\.
